Tobias Gilk, an architect, is perhaps the most unlikely MRI safety advocate. His introduction to MRI safety came in 2002, when designing an MRI suite when he discovered that there were zero minimum standards for safety in MRI suite design & construction. That realization led him to become an advocate for MRI safety design standards (which he helped realize), and that advocacy led him down a vastly-deeper rabbit hole of MRI safety, regulatory, clinical, and operational. He has dedicated the past 20+ years to improving MRI safety.

Tobias has twice served as a member of the American College of Radiology's MRI Safety Committee, has been a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission's MRI safety technical working group, has contributed to ASTM International's standard-setting efforts for MRI safety of implants and devices, and is a founding Board Member and a Past-Chair of the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety, and holds ABMRS certifications for MRSO & MRSE.
